Do Intimate Relationships Improve With Age?
There are some recent studies that suggest that marriages that last through the decades actually improve. Even couples that were unhappy often become happier as they age.
The fact is that most studies focus on young couples in the child rearing years. Little emphasis has been placed on seeing how older couples who’ve been through all the rigors of raising a family and getting ahead at jobs fare in marriages.
According to a study of 156 older couples at the University of California at Berkeley the acquisition of age seems to allow couples to do a better job of resolving problems and keeping the attachment going. Older partners are better equipped to make the bond of affection work positively to calm themselves and to negotiate acceptable resolutions of problems.
This process is less likely to occur with younger couples who often remain in conflict to the point of breakup. The study is ongoing and plans to reveal more in about a year.
So, for those couples who are able to stick together through thick and thin, is it possible that the best is yet to come? Please give us your thoughts by commenting in the space provided below.
