The Science of Anti-Aging

Roughly 8,000 baby boomers are turning 60 each day - causing the search for the fountain of youth to turn into a race among not only these boomers, but also doctors, companies and researchers. This new “science” - labeled “geroscience” - is a new field that embraces growing old, but treats it more like a preventable disease, as opposed to an inevitable process.

Geroscience is more than a fancy new name for something that already existed. It combines the study of the human aging process with the study of age-related diseases.

Dr. Pankaj Kapahi says, “If we understand the basic mechanisms of aging, we’ll be able to tackle these diseases simultaneously.” At the Buck Institute for Age Research, Geroscience researchers are trying to understand the link between aging and disease in people, by investigating all kinds of seemingly unlikely “suspects” - worms, fruit flies and mice.

It may seems strange, but these insects, bugs and animals age a lot like humans AND happen to share many of the same aging disease genes. By altering some of those aging genes, Buck scientists have been able to extend the life-span of their tiny test subjects. Which is kind of amazing - but it’s not enough to just live longer, of course you want to continue to feel healthy as each birthday passes. Which presents another challenge, and some more good news: the scientists’ tweak in aging genes also delayed the onset of age-related diseases. Findings that support the geroscientists’ theory that there may be master switches in the body that control both aging AND disease … and that raise the possibility of one day developing tests and treatments that target both.

While science catches up to our desire to feel young, check out my anti-aging Report which talks about specific things you can do to help stop aging from the inside out!
