Partially - I agree with you here. It is always important to get medical advice when talking about supplements. HOWEVER - most GPs, in my experience, do NOT have extensive training in nutritional medicine or nutrition beyond the country sponsored food guides.

I can't speak on the American food guide, though I can talk a bit about Canada's food guide. Designed in 1942 it was mainly invented to a: ratio food for the war, b: help reduce death by scurvy, rickets, etc.

Now it's certainly done it's gone, and has been revised, though it still doesn't address huge concerns like degenerative diseases (ie. cancer, diabetes, alzheimers, etc.) and which, to my knowledge approximately 80% of North Americans die by such a means.

So is our food guide working? Are we getting all the nutrition we need, from a balanced diet? I don't know so. I strongly believe, based on my research, we need to find ways to dramatically increase our intake of carotenoid antioxidants, and while antioxidants are found in a number of foods - the bioavailability of theme, doesn't always promote optimal absorption.

Which is why I think, supplements - especially those focusing on anti-oxidant absorption is MANDATORY for a healthier, possibly longer life.
