Those of us who are becoming more chronologically advantaged, face it, getting older, often have not had exposure to the benefits of meditation. It just hasn't been a part of many older Americans' world view. Just because we're aging, and hopefully gaining greater wisdom, doesn't mean that we are not subject to the same sorts of stress others feel in this fast paced, modern world. Here is a rundown on the various approaches to meditation.

Methods of Meditation

Everyone has heard about meditation and its manifold benefits. Various researches conducted worldwide have proved that nothing else benefits the soul and the body like meditation does.

As a novice meditation can seem quite intimidating especially because it has strong ties to some religions. But meditations can benefit your cognitive as well as your corporal systems. If this sounds good than? go for it.

To get you moving with meditation, here are some tips that you can use as a beginner:

1. Zen Buddhist Meditation Technique or Zazen- This method is most regularly linked with religion. Nevertheless, this technique, as put forth by Lord Buddha, has shown itself to be a most effective one. Zazen is at the core of the Zen Buddhist rites- this entails a focus on breath, sitting up and being quiet.

Instructions- As a novice, begin by sitting up, and counting to 10, and letting out your breath after each number. After counting your breaths in and out go back to 1 and begin once more. If you are unable to maintain your focus while counting, redirect your focus onto your breaths and begin once more. As you become more skilled in this method, you can cease counting and focus solely on your breaths. It may take years to come to this point as focusing without counting is quite difficult to do. The Zen meditation method can lift your heart and soul, and increase your consciousness, and sensitivity.

2. Mantra Meditation Method- This is a method at the center of the Hindu faith, and because of its efficaciousness, it is a favorite method. The name reveals the system- you select a mantra that you can repeat either mentally or out loud with ease. This can aid you in a focus of your energy and thus you may more easily increase your ability to concentrate.

One you might try is the So Hum mantra meditation. As you inhale you say in your mind, Sooo, and then Hummm as you let your breath out. 'So Hum" translates as 'I am That', meaning you are one with deity. This method opens up your emotion center and lets you give love without reserve.

3. The Chakra Meditation Method- To begin, Chakra are whirlpools of energy that must be balanced to gain the many benefits by this method and it's many versions. You may find this very interesting method of meditation interesting. As you attain balance in your energies your emotional and physical aspects can be greatly benefited. Free and stabilize your energies by following these guidelines-

a. Arrange your Chakra upon your body and concentrate on it. Gradually you will be mindful of the placement of your Chakra and the energy it contains will begin to open up.

b. The Chakras are in direct relation to the 'Beej mantra' or the 'seed sound'. As you say the Chakra again and again, the target area is opened up and balances. Care is used in this method to prevent opening these areas too fast.

If you want to find out how your life can be benefited from meditation just give it a try and find out!

The increased volatility in the US Stock markets over the past few weeks has scared investors, now may be a good time to look at what happened in the 1987 market crash.

The increased volatility in the US Stock markets over the past few weeks has scared investors, now may be a good time to look at what happened in the 1987 market crash.

During October 14 and October 19, 1987, major indexes in the United States dropped 30 percent or more. On October 19, 1987, a day now know as Black Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted 508 points, losing 22.6% of its total value, while the S&P 500 dropped 20.4%, falling from 282.7 to 225.06.

The 1987 crash ended the five-year bull market that had seen the Dow rise from 776 points in August 1982 to a high of 2,722.42 points in August 1987. Unlike what happened in 1929, however, the market rallied immediately after the crash, posting a record one-day gain of 102.27 the very next day and 186.64 points on Thursday October 22. It took only two years for the Dow to recover completely; by September of 1989, the market had regained all of the value it had lost in the '87 crash.

Like today, many investors feared that the a stock market crash would trigger a major recession. Instead, the impact from the crash turned out to be surprisingly small. This phenomenon was due, in part, to the intervention of the Federal Reserve. The worst economic losses occurred on Wall Street itself, where 15,000 jobs were lost in the financial industry.

Numerous explanations have been offered as to the cause of the crash, although none may be said to have been the sole determinant. Among these are computer trading and derivative securities, illiquidity, trade and budget deficits, and overvaluation. Below are some of the major theories of what happened.

1: DERIVATIVE TRADING

Initial blame for the 1987 crash centered on the relationship between stock markets, index options and futures markets. In the former, investors buy actual shares of stock; in the latter they are only purchasing rights to buy or sell stocks at particular prices. Thus options and futures are known as derivatives, because their value derives from changes in stock prices even though no actual shares are owned. The Brady Commission [also known as the Presidential Task Force on Market Mechanisms, which was appointed to investigate the causes of the crash], concluded that the failure of stock markets and derivatives markets to operate in sync was the major factor behind the crash.

2: COMPUTER TRADING

In searching for the cause of the crash, many analysts blame the use of computer trading (also known as program trading) by large institutional investing companies. In program trading, computers were programmed to automatically order large stock trades when certain market trends prevailed. However, studies show that during the 1987 U.S. Crash, other stock markets which did not use program trading also crashed, some with losses even more severe than the U.S. market.

3: ILLIQUIDITY

During the Crash, trading mechanisms in financial markets were not able to deal with such a large flow of sell orders. Many common stocks in the New York Stock Exchange were not traded until late in the morning of October 19 because the specialists could not find enough buyers to purchase the amount of stocks that sellers wanted to get rid of at certain prices. As a result, trading was terminated in many listed stocks. This insufficient liquidity may have had a significant effect on the size of the price drop, since investors had overestimated the amount of liquidity. However, negative news to investors about the liquidity of stock, option and futures markets cannot explain why so many people decided to sell stock at the same time.

4: U.S. TRADE AND BUDGET DEFICITS

Another important trigger in the market crash was the announcement of a large U.S. trade deficit on October 14, which led then Treasury Secretary James Baker to suggest the need for a fall in the dollar on foreign exchange markets. The fear of a lower dollar led foreigners to pull out of dollar-denominated assets, which then caused a sharp rise in interest rates.

One belief is that the large trade and budget deficits during the third quarter of 1987 might have led investors into thinking that these deficits would cause a fall of the U.S. stocks compared with foreign securities (this was the largest U.S. trade deficit since 1960). However, if the large U.S. budget deficit was the cause, why did stock markets in other countries crash as well? (Unexpected changes in the trade deficit were bad news for one country; it would be good news for its trading partner.)

INVESTING IN BONDS AS AN ATTRACTIVE ALTERNATIVE

Long-term bond yields that had started 1987 at 7.6% climbed to approximately 10% during the summer before the crash. This offered a lucrative alternative to stocks for investors looking for yield.

6: OVERVALUATION

Many analysts agree that stock prices were overvalued in September, 1987. Price/Earning ratio and Price/Dividend ratios were too high [Historically, the P/E ratio is about 15 to 1; in October 1987 the P/E for the S&P 500 had risen to about 20 to 1]. Does that imply that overvaluation caused the 1987 Crash? While these ratios were at historically high levels, similar Price/Earning and Price/Dividends values had been seen for most of the 1960-72 period. Since no crash happened during that period, we can assume that overvaluation did not trigger crashes every time.

In looking back at the 1987 crash we can see that there are not many similarities to today's financial markets. Bonds are not at attractive levels, stocks are not overvalued and computer trading has evolved significantly over the past 20 years. Emotional fear is in the market. Once the fear subsides, it will be back to business as usual.

As we age, back problems often begin to interfere with normal activities, and that can include getting a good night's sleep. Here are some pointers to help with the problem that you may want to keep in mind.

3 Simple Ways To Stop Back Problems From Ruining Your Sleep

Back problems and back pain are possibly the most frustrating physical hardship to endure. Not only are back problems difficult to diagnose, they seem to interfere with the most routine of our daily tasks. Walking, bending over, and even sitting for lengthy periods of time can be challenging and painful. Have you ever aggravated your back pain with a simple sneeze?

Even with simple daily tasks hindered by back pain, there's nothing worse than losing a good night's sleep due to back problems. There's no question that back problems are extremely hard to diagnose. However, there are a few easy, inexpensive solutions which can help your back pain and allow you a good nights rest.

Interestingly, the manner in which you sleep can cause you to toss and turn and feel non-refreshed, even after a full eight hours devoted to sleep. Most back problems and back pain are attributed to poor posture and misalignment due to improper lifting, sitting for long periods of time, and other activities. Therefore, it stands to reason you should ensure your body alignment and posture while sleeping aren't contributing to or even causing your back pain.

Proper Sleep Alignment Is Key

A key factor in getting a good night's sleep and reducing back pain is to make sure you have proper sleep alignment. This means sleeping in such a way that there's no added pressure on your back or neck. It doesn't matter in which position you like to sleep - what is most important is aligning properly to take pressure off your back.

There are three easy, inexpensive solutions to proper sleep alignment. Adding a memory foam pad to your mattress will ensure your entire body is supported, unlike most mattresses. Another solution is a lumbar/spine pad, which are designed to provide continuous lower back support and remove additional pressure on your back. Also you should consider a countoured pillow. These pillows ensure your head and neck are supported and in proper alignment.

There's a good chance your back pain is aggravated or even caused by how you sleep. You can greatly reduce or even eliminate your back pain with inexpensive, ergonomic solutions like memory foam pads or countoured pillows. Of course, it's also important to add healthy habits to your life like non jarring low impact exercise. Pilates are extremely effective in helping back problems. Added together, these simple solutions can greatly improve not only your sleep, but your overall quality of life.

Six Things You Need To Know About Ltci And Survivorship Benefits

We know that long term care insurance can be tricky in terms of what's actually covered and what isn't. Many of the policies carry survivorship benefits and there are some things it's well to keep in mind as you evaluate your situation.

The survivorship benefit is very important if you are looking into getting a long term care insurance quote. This is one of many benefits you should consider and there are many reasons why. Here are six things to think about with the survivorship benefit that might impact you if you get a long term care insurance policy.

1. You must be married to get a survivorship benefit. This must be a valid marriage. You cannot be living with a person but they must actually be your spouse. In addition, some insurance companies do not recognize homosexual couples and they also might not recognize common law marriages.

2. The long term care insurance cost will be higher if you should choose the survivorship benefit. The more benefits you add to your package the more money you will pay into the policy. However, remember this is like a savings account and it will still benefit both you and your spouse.

3. A survivorship benefit usually has a stipulation to it before you can actually use the benefit. This stipulation is in years and will usually require approximately 10 years of paying on the policy without having a single claim to the company. This means that you or your spouse will not have been hospitalized for any reason or had any other claim to the company throughout the entire duration of a set time frame.

4. The survivorship benefit on a couple's long term care insurance policy means that if one of the people in the marriage dies, the survivor of the relationship no longer has to pay the premiums for the rest of their life. This is designed to help a person remain on the policy because most likely their income has been cut in half because of the death.

5. When survivorship is on the long term car insurance quote and a person in the marriage dies, the other person receives full benefits for life also. This means that they will receive the entirety of what they were paying for before the person died.

6. The long term care insurance policy will not change when a spouse dies. The benefits being paid for before the time of death will remain in effect and active for the rest of the living person's life.

When you get a long term care insurance quote and you are married it is important to consider the survivorship benefit on your policy. Don't get a policy without it or you could be in trouble if your spouse dies.

If you medicate for insomnia, there can be long term effects that you might not have considered. The article that follows has some valuable information on that topic.

An ongoing spell of insomnia could lead you to try almost anything to help you get some much needed rest. But don't resort to just any solution; be sure you know what your options are and how they work.

Should You Medicate Your Insomnia?

Most people who experience a few nights in a row of insomnia will head straight to the pharmacy to get an over the counter remedy. You might get some relief from a sleep aid at first, but they won't give you long term results because they don't fix the problem.

A sleep aid should not be utilized as a fix for insomnia. It could assist you at first, yet you need to ascertain the reason why you're experiencing sleep problems. For your long term health, you don't want to have to rely on medication to help you sleep at night.

Lots of people get hooked on medications and aren't able to fall asleep if they give them up. Others have undesirable side effects, or experience complications due to interaction with their prescription meds.

Antihistamines, a familiar remedy for allergies, is a common ingredient in over the counter sleeping aids. They make you sleepy and help to make sure you remain asleep. Some people experience drowsiness the next day, which might interrupt your natural sleep cycle. Side effects could include constipation, dizziness, memory loss, blurred vision, and dry mouth. If you become dependent on them, you will require increasingly larger doses to get the benefits.

You might get a prescription for a more potent medication, perhaps a non-benzodiazephine. This will rev up the normal chemical processes in your brain and encourage drowsiness. If you need a sleep aid for long-term treatment of insomnia, it's safer than taking nonprescription, short term cures, however they can also cause dependency.

Although it's not that common anymore, if your insomnia is extreme, your doctor might give you a prescription for a tranquilizer. This causes drowsiness by slowing your nervous system. It's a short-term answer that might leave you feeling foggy the next day.

You might be prescribed antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications that act as sedatives if your doctor believes it's the best alternative for you. These are common, but don't have the same possibilities for addictivion as other prescription drugs.

If you want to avoid the medical choices and select something more natural, you could look at an herbal remedy for your insomnia. There are herbs that have been shown to encourage a good night's sleep, such as chamomile, which is often served up as tea.

Melatonin, valerian root and SAMe are also considered to be effective herbal insomnia treatments. Be sure you take the correct dosage, since too much of a good thing can sometimes lead to uninvited side effects.

As we become adults, we are faced with important decisions throughout our life. We deal with them the best we can, but what about our parents? The decision on whether to put them in a home is a brutal one.

The statistics show something very clear. We are all living longer. Modern healthcare has advanced to the point where we can all live for years and years. Unfortunately, this has resulted in long term care issues that many families are in turmoil over.

For much of your life, your parents made the key decisions in your life. How things have changed. Now you are faced with deciding a key development in their life. Be careful as it is clearly one full of emotional issues.

The decision you face is tough. Do you put a parent in a home or bring them to yours and care for them? Many consider bringing a parent home, but how big a burden is this? It can radically change your life.

As you can probably tell already, the answers to these questions are difficult. Guilt, anger, financial stress and marital stress are all things that can come up. You owe your parents, but to what extent? There is no correct answer.

At first glance, many people consider bringing their parents home to care for them. This is noble and makes sense emotionally since they, of course, cared for you. This is a huge burden, however, which can lead to emotional and financial stress.

Should you bring parents home to live with you? Well, it is definitely an option, but it can cause a tremendous amount of stress on your life. Generally, it is not advisable. If a parent is suffering from dementia, it should generally be considered a mistake.

As our parents age, a percentage of them will suffer from some form of dementia. It is a brutal thing to watch. It is so emotionally vicious that trying to care for the parent is really risking your own emotional health.

The bigger issue, however, is the care they need. Simply put, they need a lot. People with dementia will get up and walk away without any recognition of where they are or where they are going. It happens all the time and can lead to panic as you try to find them.

Overall, placing parents in professional elder care facilities is a smart decision. There are a variety of options, so they can get the care they need. They will also be surrounded by other seniors.

Even if your parents are hesitant, do not feel guilty with putting them in a home. You have to live your life. They will ultimately be happier when they make new friends and when you come by to see them.

As with any devastating disease, Alzheimers Disease included, there are always a number of myths and misunderstandings that abound. Rumor and innuendo are to be expected when lay people attempt to comprehend difficult medical concepts. Things are missed in translation or given their own interpretation which may or may not be accurate. That's just human nature.

We came across this article which dispels some of the myths which have grown up around Alzheimers. It's well worth the read.

Alzheimer Myths Unveiled

Typically, there are myths that surround every illness, and Alzheimer's disease is no exception to the rule. When a diagnosis of this disorder is received from a doctor, it is critical to know fact from fiction, in order to better manage this devastating illness. This article will debunk four common rumors regarding Alzheimer's disease.

One common myth that some people have is that Alzheimer's disease is not fatal, which of course is not true. Alzheimer's works by destroying brain cells, causing memory loss, awkward social situations, loss of bodily functions, and a whole host of other side effects. Bit by bit, the disease will take away one's ability to lead a normal life such as was enjoyed before one was diagnosed.

A second myth involves people with good intentions wishing away the symptoms of the disease. They may be unwilling to admit that they have a problem to friends or family, even while their memory loss increases.

Individuals who are in denial typically do not receive help until their condition is already at a moderate level, and they begin to suffer impaired function in their lives. Some may not recognize that they have a problem at all, and it will require an incident to get friends and family involved in the treatment plan.

Some individuals believe that there is currently treatment that can stop the progression of Alzheimer's disease; however, this is unfortunately a myth. While research is being conducted at a rapid pace, the only options that exist in treating Alzheimer's involves drugs which temporarily relieve symptoms for as long as a year and then will cease to work. Management of the illness is currently the only alternative to the lack of treatment.

Some individuals think that silver dental fillings can cause an early onset of Alzheimer's or contribute to a higher risk to those over the age of 65, due to the fact that most heavy metals are toxic to humans in large quantities.

The World Health Organization and the FDA have conducted numerous studies to set to rest any public health concerns regarding mercury amalgams, and the National Institute of Health, as well as the New England Journal of Medicine, have backed up these findings.

Eliminating falsehoods and exposing truth is an important process of learning and the debunking of these myths should clear up some misconceptions regarding Alzheimer's disease. With so much more to learn, staying informed is essential to proper management of this illness.

Modern medicine relies heavily on surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy in treating cancer.. For all of us who have gopne through these devastating treatments, we all look for alternative ways to treat our symptoms and to rebuild our natural health..

We all recognize that modern medicine has made amazing leaps and bounds in the treatment and management of cancer particularly when compared with treatments of the past, however, we have a long way to go before cancer is 100% curable. Further more, cancer is taking on different forms and is increasing in thew number of diagnosed cases throughout the world's population.

It cannot be denied that modern medicine has come a long way in the treatment and management of many forms of cancer. Our knowledge and treatment of these maladies is far in advance of what was common practice of years past, however, we have a long way to go before cancer is 100% curable. Unfortunately cancer is taking on different forms and is increasing in regularity throughout the worlds population.

Many of us believe the alternative medicine for cancer can best be found in altering our diets and to include other herbal remedies that are known to assist in regeneration of the body as well as in pain management giving sufferers a mor holistic approach to both prevention and the cure of cancer.

Alternative Medicine for Cancer Prevention

It is well known that adequate fiber content helps to prevent cancers of the digestive tract. Holistic nutrition using coarse grain and unrefined flour are therefore useful forms of alternative medicine for cancer containment. Traditional medicine also has dietary supplements based on the husks of cereals which help to keep bowel movement in good order. It is worth following principles of alternative medicine for cancer prevention if malignancies of the colon and surrounding areas are likely.

Similarly, there are herbal extracts available which help cancerous lesions developing in the liver. The vitamins, minerals, enzymes and elements found in fresh organic fruits and vegetables are known to be the building blocks and the repair kit of the human body It is therefore worthwhile to use alternative medicine for cancer management of vital organs in a pro-active way.

Alternative Medicine for Cancer Management near Termination

As the population of the world becomes more aware of he symptoms of cancer and a general understanding of how to prevent there onset along with timely detection should prevent every case of cancer from reaching a stage at which it can no longer be arrested, but unfortunately medical science is yet to reach the plane from which all patients can be cured effectively. Patients may have to spend considerable periods in terminal and progressive stages of eventually fatal illness.

Thankfully, today more and more people are understanding that essential nutrition and pain management are key considerations to make the final days of a terminally ill patient as comfortable as possible. Alternative medicine for cancer has important applications in this tragic but sometimes inescapable context. Nutrition powders and fluid extracts can be used on patients who are too unwell to enjoy normal meals, while topical preparations can be used with modern drugs to deal with distressing pain.

There are also some unsubstantiated claims of alternative medicine for cancer containment or reversal, which patients and their relatives may like to try when modern methods offer no further hope. Some patients are known to have exceeded the prognoses for their malignant conditions by long periods using alternative medicine for cancer.

High blood pressure is at epidemic proportions in the United States today with more than 65 million people suffering from high blood pressure and another 45 million having a condition known as pre-hypertension. High blood pressure is a symptomless disease which increases your risk of heart attack and stroke and you could very easily be suffering from it without any knowledge of it until it is too late.

There are of course medicines on the market that can help in lowering blood pressure, but several of these have accompanying side effects and, even though some people may need to take medicine in the short term to lower their blood pressure, a better solution is to control the condition naturally if you are able to.

For almost all of us high blood pressure is related to weight and diet and this is a major problem today when two thirds of Americans are overweight or obese. Furthermore, most Americans get too much salt in their diets and not enough of the many other beneficial vitamins and minerals that can actually lower blood pressure. In short, you can eat your way to a lower blood pressure, if you know what you are doing.

In truth, it is often possible to lower your blood pressure quite quickly if you change your diet and begin to take some exercise. That said, if you've not taken any exercise for a long period of time you shouldn't suddenly begin a vigorous exercise program and it's always a good idea to talk to your doctor before you start any exercise program.

To start though let's talk about some things which you should avoid and top of the list comes salt. Salt is one of the main offenders in today's epidemic of high blood pressure. Too much dietary fat is also a culprit as it encourages arteriosclerosis, weight gain, and other difficulties that result in high blood pressure. Hence, two things which you should avoid (or at least reduce) in your diet are salt and excess fat, principally saturated or trans fats.

So, what types of food should you have in your diet to help you in lowering your blood pressure? Potassium is one of the major substances which is lacking in today's American diet and which is especially beneficial for your blood pressure. It help to reduce blood pressure just as sodium assists in raising your blood pressure and so getting enough potassium in your diet can help even out blood pressure.

It is very easy to get enough potassium into your diet by simply adding plenty of fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables, providing of course that they have no added suger or salt. Even though this may seem bland to some people, it is one of the best ways to ensure that you regularize your blood pressure. Naturally of course, at the same time you also want to cut down on the salt to no more than the recommended daily intake of approximately 2400 mg each day. A very good way to achieve this is not to add any salt at all to your diet because natural and unprocessed foods contain enough salt and, if you feel you need to add flavor to your food then simply try herbs and spices.

Magnesium and calcium are two other minerals which can help to reduce blood pressure. Both calcium and magnesium are considered calming minerals and the majority of Americans do not get enough of them in their diets. dairy products which are low in fat are a good source of calcium as are legumes, nuts, and dark and leafy green vegetables. You need to try to get a balance of approximately two parts of magnesium to three parts of calcium. Foods such as soybeans, sesame seeds and white beans not only contain a lot of calcium and magnesium but they are also excellent sources of potassium.

Lastly, make sure that you drink enough water and get enough fiber in your diet. Fiber helps to clear toxins and unhealthy substances from your body and it also helps you feel full so that you are not tempted to eat too much.

For senior citizens it is very arduous to manuever so mobility becomes a dilemma that needs to be solved. However, in some instances this incapacity is more severe and permanent than in other situations. When a person comes to the point that they need help moving around and they can afford it, they would benefit from using mobility scooters . A mobility scooter makes it possible for disabled individuals to maintain their independence, who otherwise may not have been able to move like they once did. In fact, electric mobility scooters are great for inside and outdoor activities, as they move smoothly and easily over a range of surfaces.

One of the best ways to locate an affordable used mobility scooter is to shop the auctions. Follow this link to browse a selection - Shop for Used Mobility Scooters.

You can save money buying a used mobility scooter if you shop around wisely. There are many reasons as to why this would be beneficial, including the fact that it obviously saves the individual money. Many people will also find that they are more able to get the used mobility scooters more rapidly as compared to ordering a new scooter simply because they do not need to save up more money. They have to save for a more limited amount of time because they will need to save up less overall, for a comparable scooter.

Many people may realize these benefits, but then be very interested as to where they can find acceptable second-hand mobility scooters. Choosing a used scooter over a brand new one will not limit the selection that an individual will be able to consider to as high a degree as most people think. There are many online auctions that offer mobility scooters. The largest one on the internet is Ebay. Using online auctions and other retailers on the web provides more opportunities to get a great deal. Beware however, you need to consider shipping cost.

If an individual does want to buy locallyor the web, you can still locate used mobility scooters. Unclaimed baggage stores are an excellent place to start looking for a used mobility scooter, although they are found infrequently in these places. If there isn't a scooter being sold presently, then we recommend that you ask the manager about how regularly they get mobility scooters. I would recommend keeping an eye on the newspaper from the largest big city near you. For instance, if you lived in Rome, Georgia, be sure to check out the classifieds of the Atlanta Constitution. Also check out the local radio stations early in the mornings for a buy/sell show. Many smaller local stations have that. That said, there are a lot of different places you can buy a terrific scooter.

Looking for a satisfactory used scooter to meet you transportation needs at a great price can be a challenge. Patience is the key. Just be smart and keep looking. Don't just settle for the first one you find, unless you know you really like it. The benefits will last for years, by helping you to get places that you never thought possible.
