For many years hormone replacement therapy was considered the medical norm to give to women who were going through menopause. Now known as hormone therapy, was a therapy that they thought not only treated the symptoms of menopause but may have also had a factor in lessening the threats of heart disease and osteoporosis.

Doctors started questioning the validity of this therapy after a clinical study in 2002 that produced evidence that hormone replacement therapy may not be as healthy as once thought that it was. Parts of the clinical testing revealed that this therapy actually might be causing more health hazards than preventing. Once doctors started studying the results of this particular test, they started changing their minds about whether or not their patients should be on this therapy long term.

The treatment takes estrogen and combines it with the man made hormone progestin. Given to patients who had trouble with handling the symptoms of menopause like hot flashes and other symptoms that come a long with menopause. This therapy use to be a long term therapy that lasted over a period of years. Because of the test however; long term use is rarely used as compared to its more common short term use presently.

Doctors have discovered that if the Bioidentical Hormone Replacement therapy is given short term, some of the health benefits can still be achieved. Doctors are discovering that with short term use, the threat of osteoporosis is lessened, heart disease with short term use might still be lessened but the therapy should be administered to the woman when they are in the early stages of post menopause. When used in moderation it is possible that the therapy can lower the risk of colorectal cancer.

If a woman has entered menopause, it is really important that she seriously consider whether or not she wants to risk taking the therapy over a long extended period of time. If they feel that the extent of their menopause is too much for them to handle as compared to the possible hazards, they might want to see if their doctor will put them on the therapy to help make menopause more tolerable.

Women and doctors both need to consider the risks seriously. It is now suspected that with long term use of hormone therapy it might actually increase the risk of heart disease. Long term use of hormones might also increase the risk of breast cancer. The increase in strokes has also been linked to the long term use as well as more false positive mammograms.

With women who have only taken estrogen for therapy it was discovered that they did not seem to have an increase in heart disease, but they still had an increase in strokes, an increase in blood clots of the legs and there seemed to be more mammograms that tested positive when they were negative.

Should a woman strongly believe that the symptoms she is suffering during menopause is far too life disrupting and they feel the risks are small compared to the menopause it would be advisable for them to contact their doctor and sit down and discuss the possible implementation of hormone therapy. Other things that might influence a woman to take the therapy is if the doctor has discovered that the woman is suffering from bone loss. Another reason might be if the woman began menopause before the age of 40.

If you happen to be suffering from any of the symptoms mentioned above, then trying the hormone therapy on a short term basis, might be able to help you with your problems. It will be up to your doctor however; to decide whether you should be put on long term versus short term.

Compounding pharmacists are professionals with specialized and trustworthy expertise in the medical field. Among the best within their industry, they have knowledge of procedures like the Bioidentical Hormone Replacement, or better known as the BHRT.

It's time for a little review of where things stand currently with cancer. It's fast becoming the number one cause of death among diseases, including heart disease. Some cancers are curable, and more research is increasing that phenomenon on a continuing basis. Take a little time to review where we are today with cancer.

An Overview Of Cancer

The second top killer disease right now is Cancer, only a few cases trailing behind Heart disease. But next year, 2010, it has been predicted that Cancer will be the number one top killer disease. The growth of abnormal cells is known as cancer. These abnormal cells grow fast, even surpassing the metabolic rate of normal healthy cells. They also invade the healthy cells' space to make room for their fast growth. Because of this, tumors and abnormal tissues are developed after some time.

Cancer can also break away from their original source and spread out to other parts of the body through the bloodstream. Unlike normal cells that use oxygen in their metabolism, cancer cells despise oxygen. The cancer cells workspace is said to be an oxygen-free zone.

The tumors produced from the abnormal growth of tissues can either be benign or malignant. Benign tumors are non-cancerous. They also grow slowly and can be easily treated by simple surgery. Malignant tumors, on the other hand, are cancerous tumors that can spread out to other parts of the body through the process of metastasis.

Since cancer cells can spread out to other parts of the body, it can affect different body parts. A single patient may have more than one cancer type. She may have developed an ovarian cancer initially but then as the cancer cells travel to other parts of the body, she may then be diagnosed with breast cancer as well, and may even have lung cancer after some time.

This is the sad truth about cancer. It can be really unpredictable. There had been a lot of patients who have been cured from their first cancer but after some years of being cancer free they begin to feel another form of cancer.

Experts say that the best way to prevent cancer development is by avoiding the cancer risk factors such as unhealthy eating habits, obesity, limited physical activity, artificial hormone therapies, some cancer-causing viruses and bacteria, sun exposure, tobacco, alcohol, and other known cancer risk factors.

The sure cure for cancer hasnt been fully developed and researched. Some of the available cancer cures are effective to a select few cancer cases but not everyone is treated. The mortality rate is still high. With millions of Americans diagnosed with cancer each year, there is still the immediate need for a sure cure. With unwavering faith and hope, cancer is still curable. Theres nothing impossible with God, as long as you have faith and hope that your cancer will be healed.

Are you prepared for the colonoscopy prep procedures?

Well, certainly colonoscopy, and all it implies, is not a subject likely to stimulate pleasant contemplation. However, for those moving along in the aging process, they eventually become a necessary evil. It actually may be helpful to have some understanding of the entire procedure if you have this unpleasant event coming up, or are satisfied that your time for a colonoscopy will come. There is one in your future. Read on for some enlightenment.

Are you prepared for the colonoscopy prep procedures?

Your doctor may recommend a colonoscopy for any of the following reasons, changes in bowel habits, blood in stool, persistent abdominal pain, or if you are over 50.

50 is the age when the risk for colon problems increases. Due to this it is recommended to have a colonoscopy every 10 years after the age of 50. However, if your family has a history of cancer you may need to have more frequent exams before the age of 50.

As with many medical procedures the dreaded anticipation of the procedure is worse than the actual deed. I mean your drugged for the procedure. Your not drugged while you worry the week before.

You will need to plan for someone to drive you home after the procedure. You cannot drive after they give you the sedatives. It will also help to have someone to talk to before the procedure to keep you from getting even more nervous.

Two names that you may hear are Proctologist and Gastroenterologist. A Proctologist is the doctor that deals with disorders of the rectum or anus. A Gastroenterologist is doctor that deals with disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.

In order to clean the colon the body needs additional amounts of water to accomplish this goal. It can be very difficult for some people to drink the required amounts to prepare for a colonoscopy.

Your doctor will recommend as many as three days or one day of liquid diet. This means you only drink not eat during this time period.

The colonoscopy is considered a routine procedure with very little discomfort. A new option available to some patients is a new pill. This pill can be taken before the colonoscopy to help prepare for the procedure by cleaning the colon. This may reduce the days necessary for colonoscopy prep

I would like to wait for the pill that does the colonoscopy for me. You know take the pill and it can be like a mars satellite exploring my intestines and sending data back to the doctors. I never have to leave my couch. I can always dream right!

Modern medicine relies heavily on surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy in treating cancer.. For all of us who have gopne through these devastating treatments, we all look for alternative ways to treat our symptoms and to rebuild our natural health..

We all recognize that modern medicine has made amazing leaps and bounds in the treatment and management of cancer particularly when compared with treatments of the past, however, we have a long way to go before cancer is 100% curable. Further more, cancer is taking on different forms and is increasing in thew number of diagnosed cases throughout the world's population.

It cannot be denied that modern medicine has come a long way in the treatment and management of many forms of cancer. Our knowledge and treatment of these maladies is far in advance of what was common practice of years past, however, we have a long way to go before cancer is 100% curable. Unfortunately cancer is taking on different forms and is increasing in regularity throughout the worlds population.

Many of us believe the alternative medicine for cancer can best be found in altering our diets and to include other herbal remedies that are known to assist in regeneration of the body as well as in pain management giving sufferers a mor holistic approach to both prevention and the cure of cancer.

Alternative Medicine for Cancer Prevention

It is well known that adequate fiber content helps to prevent cancers of the digestive tract. Holistic nutrition using coarse grain and unrefined flour are therefore useful forms of alternative medicine for cancer containment. Traditional medicine also has dietary supplements based on the husks of cereals which help to keep bowel movement in good order. It is worth following principles of alternative medicine for cancer prevention if malignancies of the colon and surrounding areas are likely.

Similarly, there are herbal extracts available which help cancerous lesions developing in the liver. The vitamins, minerals, enzymes and elements found in fresh organic fruits and vegetables are known to be the building blocks and the repair kit of the human body It is therefore worthwhile to use alternative medicine for cancer management of vital organs in a pro-active way.

Alternative Medicine for Cancer Management near Termination

As the population of the world becomes more aware of he symptoms of cancer and a general understanding of how to prevent there onset along with timely detection should prevent every case of cancer from reaching a stage at which it can no longer be arrested, but unfortunately medical science is yet to reach the plane from which all patients can be cured effectively. Patients may have to spend considerable periods in terminal and progressive stages of eventually fatal illness.

Thankfully, today more and more people are understanding that essential nutrition and pain management are key considerations to make the final days of a terminally ill patient as comfortable as possible. Alternative medicine for cancer has important applications in this tragic but sometimes inescapable context. Nutrition powders and fluid extracts can be used on patients who are too unwell to enjoy normal meals, while topical preparations can be used with modern drugs to deal with distressing pain.

There are also some unsubstantiated claims of alternative medicine for cancer containment or reversal, which patients and their relatives may like to try when modern methods offer no further hope. Some patients are known to have exceeded the prognoses for their malignant conditions by long periods using alternative medicine for cancer.

Tobacco could help treat cancer?
by Michael Moshier
Anti-Aging Straight Talk

It's a well-known fact that tobacco is related to many cancer cases, but now researchers are suggesting it may actually be the key to treating one form of the disease! This is great - if a bit confusing - news for baby boomers, who can be especially hard-hit by different types of cancer as they age.

US scientists used the plant to "grow" key components of a cancer vaccine, and the study - tackled by researchers at Stanford - suggests they could be used to tackle a form of lymphoma. The plants are being used as factories for an antibody chemical which is known to be characteristic to the cells which cause follicular B-cell lymphoma, a type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

These antibodies created by the plant are put into a patient that has ideally been recently diagnosed with the disease, to help the body's immune system attack any cell carrying lymphoma. This research means that the body could then recognize these cells and destroy the ones that are carrying the disease.

This idea - in itself - has been around for a while, and attempts have already been made to grow these antibodies inside animal cells, but a plant-grown vaccine would be much cheaper and could potentially carry less risk to the patient, as animal cells might hold unknown viruses.

An interesting - and potentially better and safer - way to possibly treat cancer in the future, and all from a plant that may have been thought to have little redeeming value.

Recently Resveratrol has stirred considerable excitement in the dash among marketers to cash in on the anti-aging boom. In an earlier discussion here at AgeNotes.Com, Michael Moshier provided some insight into ongoing Resveratrol studies.

Just what is Resveratrol, where does it come from and what does it do? Is it simply hype, or is there substance to the claims? Read on to learn more from the article that follows.

Sources of Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant which is found predominantly in the skin of grapes. This is produced as a defense mechanism against environmental stress by the plants. Resveratrol is also found in smaller quantities in lily, spruce and eucalyptus apart from being produced as diet supplements.

Recent studies have shown some interesting facts about this antioxidant. Resveratrol is seen to reduce the aggregation of platelets in the blood thereby reducing the risk of strokes, clots and even heart attacks. Moreover, resveratrol helps in prevention of damage of cells resulting from the presence of free radicals. This powerful antioxidant is also known to fight cancer effectively in all stages.

Although it is all at the experimental stage, resveratrol shows a huge potential in the treatment of coronary diseases and cancer. Research is being conducted extensively to find out how best this antioxidant can be used to fight these more common but deadly diseases. ?

As it has been proved time and again, consumption of wine or alcohol reduces the incidence of coronary diseases. This is true especially in case of red wine. Presence of resveratrol has been linked to this finding. Recent studies have proven that being a very effective antioxidant, resveratrol protects cells from lipid peroxidation.

Due to more fermentation period, red wine is a better source of this antioxidant than the white wine. Apart from grapes, blueberries are another excellent natural source of resveratrol. The Japanese Knotweed contains resveratrol in good quantities.

Blueberries are another natural source of resveratrol. A lot of antioxidants are present in blueberries along with resveratrol. Peanuts and peanut sprouts are also found to be excellent natural sources of resveratrol.

Polygonum Cuspidatum commonly known as the Japanese Knotweed is also a good source of naturally occurring resveratrol.

Apart from these naturally occurring sources, resveratrol is also produced by companies as diet supplements. These supplements are made in the form of either powders or tablets and are derived from the natural sources like skins of grapes, seeds of grapes, Japanese knotweed, red wine, etc.

Resveratrol is sometimes offered in the form of a transdermal patch. This is similar to the nicotine patch. Apart from this, it is also manufactured in liquid form for easier consumption. It is always better to consult with the doctor before taking these supplements as a prevention or cure for any condition.

Valuable information about this wonder antioxidant can be had from the internet. A lot of information is available on recent studies and research on this product along with new resveratrol based supplements introduced in the market.

Gaining pain control is a common delemma when you are dealing with cancer patients. Yet there is the possibility that pain can come from an outside source, such as an infection or muscular disease. By talking with your physician, you can find ways to manage your aches when fighting cancer.

Pain can be acute or chronic. Acute pain is severe, but short-lived and chronic is pain that lasts for longer periods of time, and can range from mild to severe. Sometimes patients will experience breakthrough pain, which is pain that breaks through medications prescribed to the patient. According to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network's (NCCN) August 2005 pain prevention report, one-third of cancer patients experience pain with their treatments. The NCCN also reports that nearly two-thirds of patients with recurring cancer or advanced stages of cancer experience pain.

Pain Control is Possible

Pain control is possible, even for those suffering from cancer, and it can give a patient a better quality of life. Pain in cancer patients is most often a result of the cancer itself, but sometimes it can result from a specific treatment, such as radiation therapy. Pain can be relieved through several ways. For example, pain control can be through medications, relaxation methods, acupuncture or mental therapy sessions. Each patient is unique and pain can be evaluated through a cancer team made up of specialists such as an oncologist, anesthesiologist, pain specialists and your physician.

It is important for you to discuss any pain you experience with your doctor or medical professional so they can figure out what methods would work best for you. The earlier pain is ministered to, the easier it will be to handle it during your cancer treatments. If you experience pain that is unrelated to your cancer diagnosis, it is important to find the best method to stop the pain before beginning your treatment. For example, arthritis pain prevention can be found through physical therapy sessions, water therapy or oral medications. If a patient suffers from cancer in the spinal cord, he or she may need to learn about back and neck pain control. This type of pain occurs because the cancer causes the spinal cord to compress, causing sharp pains in the back and neck regions.

Pain Medications

The National Cancer Institute's (NCI) web site mentions several medications doctors use to maintain pain control for their patients. This can range from steroids for swelling, anti-inflammatory drugs, or morphine. The NCI discusses the side affects usually associated with pain medication. Many of the pain medications used for cancer patients are not addictive and patients shouldn't worry about taking them. The side affects associated with some medications, such as vomiting or drowsiness, can be prevented or relieved by your doctor. It can be helpful if you keep a record of your pain to help doctors know where it occurs and how long it persists. This will give them a better idea of what is causing your pain. Pain can even cause emotional distress, depression or anxiety. Simply speaking to a therapist or counselor can help you talk through the issues you face with your pain.

Also worth pointing out is the helpful information about pain control and pain relief is available at this site Pain Relief Options, detailing a number of different approaches to contolling pain.

Managing pain control with cancer is not a figment of one's imagination. In fact, the hurt that accompanies cancer and its treatments can be controlled with the proper medication or therapy. Discussing any ache or soreness in your body with a physician will put you on the path to a smoother, more tolerable recovery from cancer.

Breast cancer prevention should be of paramount concern to all women moving along in the aging process considering that there is a one in eight chance they will develop it at some point in their life. Medical advancements within the last several decades have contributed to saving thousands of lives from this deadly disease.

When it comes to breast cancer prevention, knowing your risks plays an important part in protecting yourself from danger. It can be as simple as having a screening performed by your doctor. How early you get involved in protecting yourself could be the difference between life and death.

Risk Factors

Risk factors are a crucial part of breast cancer prevention. You can personally manipulate some risk factors, but other are considered uncontrollable. Controlled factors can be determined by your lifestyle. Eating foods that are high in fat and low in nutrients can be a culprit to cancer, along with smoking and excessive drinking. The choices you make in life also become risk factors. Women who take oral contraceptives could have a greater chance of developing this deadly disease. Having children before the age of thirty can put women at a higher risk for breast cancer. Although some risk factors are easier to control than others, familiarizing oneself with plenty of information will only make fighting cancer easier for you.

Forgoing any form of physical activity can also greatly increase a woman's chance of developing this deadly disease, especially if she is already overweight. But a woman can be perfectly healthy, have absolutely no risk factors, and still develop breast cancer. The bottom line is that cancer is a gamble, and you have to arm yourself with enough knowledge to have a winning hand.

Medications

There are certain medications available to women who fall under high risk factors for breast cancer. The drug Tamoxifen has been used in the United States for over twenty-five years to help in the fight for breast cancer prevention. The drug is taken once daily as a pill and interferes with the female hormone estrogen, preventing it from attaching itself to cells in the breast tissue. This medication can also be used to treat women already diagnosed with breast cancer because it can slow down or cease the growth of cancerous cells. Tamoxifen has even been associated with helping prevent a recurrence in women who previously suffered from breast cancer.

Mammograms

A more common way to prevent breast cancer is through mammograms. A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast and is the most common form of prevention. Women who are over forty years of age should get mammograms on a yearly basis. For women in their twenty's and thirty's, the American Cancer Society's web site recommends getting clinical breast exams at least every three years from a medical professional. This test is performed using the tips of the fingers to check the entire breast area and under the arm. In addition to mammograms and clinical breast exams, women should also perform breast self exams each month to recognize any signs of lumps or abnormalities in the tissue.

If You Are Uninsured

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) is able to help women who fall within the lower poverty levels, are uninsured or underserved gain access to screenings for breast cancer. This program is called the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. The CDC's web site touts it has served more than two million women under this program since its inception in 1991. In 2000, Congress expanded this service by opening it up to women who are on Medicaid. This breast cancer control act, formally titled the Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment Act, is a way to help women, who may have little access to quality health care, have a chance at breast and cervical cancer prevention.

Being smart and knowing your body is the best way to arm yourself for breast cancer prevention. There is a plethora of information available at a moments notice to give you the necessary information to determine if you are at risk for developing this disease. Learning your family history and going to your doctor regularly will put you on the path towards a long and cancer-free life.
