As folks move along in the aging process, sometimes alcohol consumption can begin to increase without really being all that conscious of it. Alcoholism is a progressive disease. It only gets worse, and never better. As we age, it's often the lifestyle illnesses, ones we could have avoided, that nail us - cancer or emphysema from smoking, or cirrhosis of the liver, heart disease or worse from alcohol consumption.

If you are having doubts whether your drinking is excessive, it probably is. You can deny it, but it's well to listen to those nagging doubts. Why risk having an increasingly miserable life as you grow older? Here's some pertinent information on the subject.

If You Are Questioning Your Drinking Habits

If you have gotten to the point of questioning whether or not you have a drinking problem you are probably at the point where you actually do. More than that, if the people around you have been commenting on the amount of alcohol you drink then you may want to listen up. You do have a drinking problem if you are at the point where alcohol is negatively affecting your life and you are continuing to drink.

While there may not seem to be any silver linings in this cloud I can say with authority that there is a silver lining - the majority of people who wish to stop drinking can do so with nothing more than willpower. It is not uncommon for many people who drink on a regular basis to reach a point where they simply decide to quit, whether it is for medical reasons or social.

Regrettably there are many out there who simply do not have the inner fortitude to follow through and quit cold turkey. If you have decided to quit but find yourself continuing to reach for a drink then the problem becomes one of dependency and even alcohol abuse. Alcoholism is reached when this behavior becomes normal.

If you and your family have been affected by your drinking habits there is help available. Your first stop should be your physician who can advise you regarding whether medication will be necessary as well as which care centers can assist you in quitting. Alcoholics Anonymous is another option for those who are looking for group and one on one support.

The largest library in the world, the internet, is another option for finding groups that can support you in your efforts to live a life free from the reliance on alcohol. Talking with others who are on the same path as you and who understand what you are going through is important for your success in this battle.

I'm now in my 70s. From time to time I reflect on my parents, both long deceased now, who needed an increasing amount of care as they entered their 80s. While it's true that an aging population by and large is healthier these days, I have to acknowledge that living a vigorous life won't go on forever.

Like so many experiencing the aging process, I have a revulsion at the thought of having to go into a nursing home. Simply stated, I want to live in my own home for as long as it's humanly possible. I came across the article that follows highlighting the fact that home care services have grown more prevalent and available as an alternative to nursing home care. I find that comforting. Read on for more information.

Senior Home Care Services: Benefits over Nursing Homes

As the United States population grows older, the focus on the extent of required services will have to align with the quality of the care produced. Over time a spotlight has been placed on how well residents who are placed in a care facility are treated. Some know that the type of care a person receives depends on how much loved ones are involved.

Some mature children have difficulty with placing their senior parents in a nursing home because of the negative press. Expenditure is also a part in making this decision. An alternative to nursing homes is senior home care services, which allow a person to stay put in their home and receive the level of care that they will need.

Along with determining the price and care, the types of elderly home care services are special based on an individuals need. Insurance companies have sought ways to lessen the costs of hospitalization and treatment services, which has opened the door for service providers who focus in giving these services at an individuals residence. This decreases health care costs and allows an older adult to remain in their homes. The home care landscape has shifted into a full-fledged industry, giving more options for people to choose from.

The advantages of receiving home care services rather than living in a nursing home cannot be underestimated. The cognitive portion of being able to maintain some level of independence can go a long way to improving the superiority of life for several elder adults.

Most elderly only require aid with regular, daily tasks which may include transportation to doctors appointments, grocery shopping, or bathing. Still, others may require more steady management, depending on their sickness and how far it has developed.

A person who obtains senior home care services can have more private consideration than someone who lives in a nursing home. In a nursing home, an inadequate amount of personnel must attend to a number of different people with varying levels of help. Receiving care at home can cost less than it does in a nursing home because of faculty costs that are factored into nursing homes.

The once a year costs of a nursing home change by state, but in most cases, the costs far exceed the average earnings of many older adults. Those with Medicare shortly find out that it simply covers a minute piece of long-term care, and that coverage is inadequate to the kind and amount of days. The people that cannot find the money to supplement the costs of a nursing home may want to give home care services serious contemplation.

In a recent physical, my doctor spotted some early signs of cataracts which reminds me that I should schedule an eye exam. I'm not experiencing any symptoms at all, so, like most of us, my attitude has been that if it doesn't seem broken, don't fix it. But the fact is that I haven't had my eyes looked at for at least three years.

For many years, and through my fifties, I was near sighted. Now, it's just the reverse. My distance vision is sharp, but I need glasses for reading. During my last eye exam, the doctor told me that was normal in the aging process. Anyhow, the following article is also a good reminder that I need to get an eye examination whether I think I need it or not. I'm picking up the phone to make an appointment just as soon as I've finished doing this posting. Read on for more discussion.

The Need for Optometric Eye Care in a Vision Eye Care Center

I hope this doesn't sound silly, but, let's face it, the primary cause of aging is aging itself. Of course, there are measures that can be taken to stave off the effects of aging. If you're a smoker, c'mon now, you must understand that few behaviors contribute more to the appearance of aging and deterioration of the body than smoking. It's not my place to preach, but quitting will be the best thing you can do to maintain healthy living as the aging process inevitably does it's work.

While there are medications that can aid in stopping smoking, some advocate natural methods, and the article that follows has interesting some suggestions. Read on for more enlightenment.

Best Natural Ways To Stop Smoking-How To Quit Cigarettes And Quit Smoking Now

Doctors of homeopathic medicine have known about the best natural ways to stop smoking for many years. The mainstream medical community typically recommends nicotine replacement to help you quit smoking. Homeopathic remedies contain a very small amount of actual tobacco, as well as other herbal and plant-based ingredients.

Most people that try to quit cigarettes have great difficulty, because nicotine is one of the most addictive substances. It has been compared to heroine, because of the physical withdrawal symptoms that accompany an effort to go "cold turkey".

Sometimes it is advised by doctors that one of the best natural ways to quit smoking is to slowly cut down on the quantity of cigarettes you smoke daily. However, that method really doesn't work very well to help people quit smoking. It does not work well because it doesn't take into account the strong desire the act of smoking creates.

In order to quit cigarettes, you need to be able to overcome the psychological, as well as the physical addiction. Either nicotine replacement or the small amount of tobacco in homeopathic remedies will help with the physical cravings, but not the psychological dependence.

As far as being effective, some of the best natural ways to stop smoking employ a multiple system approach. Systems that use nutritional advice and herbal remedies to help make the physical desire easier to handle can be very effective. Having a support system in place, relaxation exercises, and a good educational program give you a complete system that really works. Before you really can quit smoking you need to comprehend why it is that you smoke.

It's very rare that a smoker has not tried to quit cigarettes at one time or another. However, one thing or another always prevented them from being able to quit. If they were successful in their search for the best natural ways to stop smoking they would have been able to stop.

Because people are concerned that they may experience weight gain they stop trying to quit smoking before they even begin. Have you ever heard of the poison nut? It's a homeopathic remedy that halts hunger and the desire for food. It makes it possible to quit cigarettes, and not increase your weight.

A good homeopathic solution can be one of the best natural ways to stop smoking. It will aid you to quit smoking and not have to experience all the symptoms that are usually associated with trying to quit including that nagging cough.

It's time for a little review of where things stand currently with cancer. It's fast becoming the number one cause of death among diseases, including heart disease. Some cancers are curable, and more research is increasing that phenomenon on a continuing basis. Take a little time to review where we are today with cancer.

An Overview Of Cancer

The second top killer disease right now is Cancer, only a few cases trailing behind Heart disease. But next year, 2010, it has been predicted that Cancer will be the number one top killer disease. The growth of abnormal cells is known as cancer. These abnormal cells grow fast, even surpassing the metabolic rate of normal healthy cells. They also invade the healthy cells' space to make room for their fast growth. Because of this, tumors and abnormal tissues are developed after some time.

Cancer can also break away from their original source and spread out to other parts of the body through the bloodstream. Unlike normal cells that use oxygen in their metabolism, cancer cells despise oxygen. The cancer cells workspace is said to be an oxygen-free zone.

The tumors produced from the abnormal growth of tissues can either be benign or malignant. Benign tumors are non-cancerous. They also grow slowly and can be easily treated by simple surgery. Malignant tumors, on the other hand, are cancerous tumors that can spread out to other parts of the body through the process of metastasis.

Since cancer cells can spread out to other parts of the body, it can affect different body parts. A single patient may have more than one cancer type. She may have developed an ovarian cancer initially but then as the cancer cells travel to other parts of the body, she may then be diagnosed with breast cancer as well, and may even have lung cancer after some time.

This is the sad truth about cancer. It can be really unpredictable. There had been a lot of patients who have been cured from their first cancer but after some years of being cancer free they begin to feel another form of cancer.

Experts say that the best way to prevent cancer development is by avoiding the cancer risk factors such as unhealthy eating habits, obesity, limited physical activity, artificial hormone therapies, some cancer-causing viruses and bacteria, sun exposure, tobacco, alcohol, and other known cancer risk factors.

The sure cure for cancer hasnt been fully developed and researched. Some of the available cancer cures are effective to a select few cancer cases but not everyone is treated. The mortality rate is still high. With millions of Americans diagnosed with cancer each year, there is still the immediate need for a sure cure. With unwavering faith and hope, cancer is still curable. Theres nothing impossible with God, as long as you have faith and hope that your cancer will be healed.

At the risk of sounding like a complete Big Sur hippie, I feel I have to make the case for something called zone therapy, otherwise known as reflexology. I know what youre thinking: James, you've done it again. Yes, perhaps I have. But so what? This ancient therapy does not require the use of any special crystals or ethereal pan flute music. All that's required is a semi-open mind and your bare hands and feet.

It's essentially a hand or foot massage, yes. But reflexology is more than that. Well, it kind of depends on the intentionality of your masseuse. A reflexologist is trained to correspond points on your hands and feet (and sometimes ears) to certain organs or functions of the body. For instance, the hollow of the foot is said to correspond to your stomach. Have a bad case of Tennis Elbow? Have that part of your foot rubbed.

I know this sounds rather strange, far-fetched even, but the esteemed journal, Neuroscience Letters, claims that there is indeed a neural link between the brain and the foot. Of course, I would say, how else are we able to walk? Thanks, I'll be here all week! But seriously, folks, there is something to be said for this form of therapy. I know because it worked for me. My chronic headaches, which bordered on migraines, have abated since I started getting my hands rubbed.

Weird, sure. Creepy, maybe. But the bottom line is it works for me. It could work for you. It's like Tai Chi -- some people swear they can feel the chi running through their bodies. Other people punch people like that in the stomach and laugh. It's hard to say and I do sympathize with those of you who are creeped out by other people touching their hands and feet.

To that end, I recommend a handy, dandy foot massager. You can find models that are electric (and hence vibrating) or wooden (and do nothing but get mashed into your soft spots). The vibrating ones get the job done and even come with warm water jets and DVD players. I'm just kidding about the DVD players. Either way, it's something that may work for some people out there, and if something works, why not give a try?

A concern not only experienced by men but by a growing number of women is Alopecia, or the excessive and abnormal loss of healthy hair. Disturbing situations and genetics can be the cause of hair thinning and loss and also by hormonal ups and downs, too much physical force or lack of good nutrition. An important first step is discussing hair loss with your doctor. There is a selection of treatments on offer these days that make hair loss or thinning hair more bearable.

For thousands of people globally, everyday is a "bad hair" day because of the dilemma of thinning hair or baldness. These factors affect both men and women, hair thinning and loss usually occurs for:

Men A thinning crown or receding hair line is the most common pattern of hair loss. Hair loss occurs due to the presence of a derivative or by-product of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This hormone can shrink the hair follicles and has a greater effect in the mid-anterior scalp and temples. Some types of male hair loss are:Acute diffuse alopecia - occurs from physical or psychological factors such as hormones, nutritional deficiencies or medications.Chronic Diffuse Alopecia - can occur due to nutritional, metabolic or endocrine issues. Androgenetic Alopecia - occurs due to genetic sensitivity to male hormones. This rarely affects women.

Women Hormonal fluctuations, ie during pregnancy, childbirth or use of some methods of contraception can result in hair thinning and loss. Also experienced by females: Traction alopecia - this is caused by harsh hair styles, for example ponytails that are pulled too tight, cornrows, braiding or too frequent use of hair extensions. These actions pull at your hair over time but loss can be helped if recognized and dealt with early on. Anagen effluvium - this is due to chemotherapy. The matrix of the hair becomes broken and results in the hair shaft narrowing, eventually splintering.

Males and females can reduce or even halt hair loss or thinning, if found early enough, by using various over-the-counter treatments like: a). A shampoo that describes itself as "revitalizing/fortifying/energizing". These will nurture and guard existing hair while removing oils that can obstruct the follicles and stop re-growth. b). A daily vitamin supplement. Look for supplements labelled especially for hair and/or nails and are fortified with Vitamin B3 (niacin). These defend the hair shaft, and antioxidants, to ward off harm from free radicals. c). Weekly use, leave-in scalp treatment prepared with essential oils - oils such as lavender and orange will relax and unblock hair follicles to encourage growth, regulate oil production and sustain cell repair. Results will vary, as with any treatment, and may possibly need to be continued on a regular basis. Also, allow around 6-8 weeks before expecting to see results.

Techniques to hide hair loss: Perhaps it is time to think of some techniques to hide your hair loss if you are unhappy with your thinning hair. Whether you are a man or a woman losing hair due to heredity, stress, medication or a medical condition you can use these tips to help you cope. Use a Hair Thickening Shampoo or Conditioner Use a hair thickening shampoo and/or conditioner meant to disguise loss by making the hair appear to be thicker. Brush your hair gently after shampooing and conditioning to stop losing more hair, and allow hair to dry completely before combing or brushing it.

Styling Techniques If your hair is not as thick as it once was, there are a number of hair styling methods and hair styling products that can be employed to keep your hair looking its best at any age. Try to avoid hair gels as they only matte your hair and highlight your hair loss. Instead use hair texturizing creams and lotions that give you volume and fullness. Another good option is to use a leave-in hair conditioner that can make your hair emerge more textured and fuller. For a fuller look try blow drying your hair - For hair that is getting thin on top, try blow drying after you have washed and conditioned, then comb your hair in front directly back. Use mousse or a light hair spray to maintain the style. The blow drying will stop your hair from matting together and looking thinner.

Add Extensions to your Hair Extensions are an easy way for women and men with long thick hair to hide the fact that they are losing some. Use a salon for getting natural human hair added to your hair. This can last for several weeks to several months.

Blow-drying your Hair Think about blow drying your hair if it is thinning on top to give it more texture and body and to give your head more coverage. Brush your hair into a quiff by brushing it from the forehead up. Preserve your hair style with a touch of hairspray. If your hair is thinning all over, this is a good and effective technique to make your hair look fuller. Get a Buzz Cut - Guys Actors, sports stars, and businessmen all employ the buzz cut as a method of hiding the fact that they are thinning on top. It is a trendy, popular style that is easy to keep up. Purchase a wet-dry electric razor to groom your scalp every day and to remove the hairs you have remaining for a fresh look. If you're worried about losing your hair or if your hair is beginning to thin, pay a visit to your barber or stylist and ask for suggestions for a new hair style. There are plenty of hairstyles to choose from that will permit you to look your very best.

When you see someone in the street drinking something out of a brown paper bag, you automatically assume that they are drinking alcohol, although it is difficult to pin point back to when it actually took off. We can though confirm that the ideology of alcoholism dates back to 1849 when Magnus Huss first linked the consumption of alcohol to serious health conditions.

The word alcoholism itself was not actually recognized in the US until the late 1930s, through the formation of the alcohol support group known as Alcoholics Anonymous or AA as it is sometimes referred to. AA does not actually give alcoholism a concrete definition, but recognizes it as something between an allergy and an illness with a team support method of accountability and responsibility being a way to control alcoholism.

It wasn't until Doctor E. Morton Jellinek from New England came along that problems being experienced by chronic alcoholics were actually first classified. He defined the problem as a person through excessive alcohol consumption developed serious health conditions both physically and mentally. An alcoholic would also encounter both domestic and economical problems as a result of persistent alcohol abuse.

They therefore need treatment. This definition has seen many changes over the years by different medical affiliations. The American Medical Association currently uses the word alcoholism to refer to a particular chronic primary disease.

Some minorities in the medical field, such as Herbert Fingarette and Stanton Peele, argue against alcoholism being considered a disease. But, critics of the disease theory acknowledge that the word alcoholism; refers to a disease, and use the term heavy drinking; when discussing the harmful effects of alcohol consumption.

With alcoholism's uncertain definition, the disease is often hard to accurately detect. There is no physical or mental difference between someone who drinks habitually and an alcoholic. To get more up to date information regarding alcoholism you should definitely take a look at the blog over at stopdrinking.org as it is a real eye opener.

Fish oil for heart health is an interesting topic. And there is a good reason for this.

There's an awful lot of hype about what's good for heart health, and many claims in the supplement market that are questionable. However, there's a good bit of solid research supporting the conclusion that omega 3 fish oil offers a number of benefits. Take a look at the article that follows for some insight into the research behind fish oil.

Fish Oil that's Good for Heart Health and Research

Fish oil for heart health is an interesting topic. And there is a good reason for this.

Newspapers and magazines can't do without research news on the amazing health benefits of fish oil for heart health. It is highly recommended by doctors, nutritionists, trainers, exercise buffs and even my vet has recommended using fish oil capsules for the heart health of my pet chocolate Labrador, Phyto.

Indeed a lot of us have heard of the good health benefits for the cardiovascular system that omega 3 fish oil has, but not all are aware of the scientific research that verifies the results of the fish oil for heart health craze.

Information was printed in Circulation, the American Heart Association's official journal, which provided systematic and detailed reports on how omega 3 fatty acids from fish can help enrich the circulation and reasons why fish oil works perfectly for the health of your heart and cardiovascular system in several ways.

The study showed that fish oil fatty acids can help in decreasing cholesterol, avoid irregular heartbeat and reduce blood clots. It also lowers blood pressure and triglycerides and balances HDL and LDL, loosens the arterial walls and inhibits the development of new plaque and inflammation, vasoconstriction, platelet aggregation and a lot more. [Vol. 106:2747]

Remarkable! How some scientists have even suggested that a depressed person can get help from omega 3 fish oil. It is good for the broken hearted.

Some group of doctors made and published a study in the Journal of American Medical Association talking about the positive effects of higher fish oil consumption on decreasing a man's risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Yet, it has been observed that more women die of heart attack than from any other cause, so the scientists were interested to know if women can get the same health benefits from fish oil as men do.

They followed 84,688 women in a span of 16 years and they were able to arrive at a conclusion that women who ate 5 or more servings of fish a week have lesser risks of CHD or dying due to a heart attack as compared to women who eat less fish. [Vol. 287, No. 14]

If you ask me, it is very clear that fish oil for heart health is essential. But how much would you need? The usual recommendation is 5 or more servings of oily, cold water fish a week. It is great and will surely improve your heart health, but then again it may not be enough. Many researches do recommend at least 1 to 3 grams of fish oil daily for a healthy heart.

The only sure way that you get this is through supplements of pure omega 3 fish oil capsules that will give you a balance of all the eight naturally occurring omega 3 fatty acids.

Now you can see why a lot of people are recommending fish oil for heart health. The question is, will you do something about it? It would not be that hard to improve your health and it can be worth all the effort. Don't you find it nice to have a pain free, happy, healthy life while you grow old?

Of course it is! And it may start this moment, if you take action and follow this advice.

Time for Medicare Enrollment grows short. Each year you are required to make a choice for supplemental coverage. Those choices are terribly varied, and it requires a good deal of scrutiny to determine which one is best suited to your situation.

Medicare Enrollment Window Is Now

Navigating the myriad of choices in the Medicare program can be a daunting task for seniors today. Especially considering the changes to the program that have been enacted by Congress. Depending on your personal experiences, you may consider Medicare a blessing or a curse.

As the Medicare plans and options changed just a few years ago, so did the coverage levels that were offered and this left many scrambling trying to read through the paperwork and make decisions based on their personal needs. For many elderly people this was, to say the least a near impossible task, and once those choices were made, that was it, and they were locked into those choices.

Although many may not be aware, the yearly enrollment window is from November 15th to December 31st each year. Your window of opportunity to make changes to your Medicare plan is closing soon. Whether you make changes or you don't, you will be locked in to those choices for another year.

This yearly enrollment period is important because it is the time for you to assess your current coverage. If there are better options that you or your friends have discovered, then making changes is important. By now most of you have had time to assess how the Medicare experience is serving your needs.

The intent of the Medicare program is to serve the needs of the senior population. Considering that many people have constantly changing healthcare issues, the program's yearly enrollment period is important to address. The time to make changes is now. Even if you've been happy with your coverage, you will be well served to revisit your program coverage to assure you're getting the best care you need.
