An old saying that is odd but true states, "we dig our graves with our teeth." Unfortunately, from the time we are young we are taught that food merely provides calories and energy. But food nutrition is far more important than that. The foods you eat can make you healthier and be used for natural anti aging or they can kill you.

Nowadays, it is more important than ever to eat healthy. Certain healthy foods can help prevent heart disease or cause it. Healthy, wholesome foods can help you lose excess weight while junk foods cause you to get fat. Some foods nourish your hair and skin keeping them healthy and glowing while other foods don't, causing them to fall out sooner than they should. If you think genes are the only factor, consider this; your food choices and nutrition intake will cause some genes to activate while others lie dormant.

Making healthier food choices can help you look and feel healthier and younger while cutting the risk for disease. These changes may help cut your health care costs and lessen the chance of becoming dependent on medications as you age, which is natural anti aging.

Knowing which foods to avoid can be easy. We all know what junk food is. The more processed the food, the less nutritious it may be. But, what should we eat? Here is a partial list of food that are high in nutrition to help you feel young and stay healthy.

Bananas contain vitamin c, magnesium and potassium and are a good source of fiber. They can strengthen the stomach lining against ulcers and since they are very high in potassium, they can help regulate high blood pressure.

Barley has traditionally been known as heart medicine in the Middle East. This grain can help reduce cholesterol levels and contains antioxidants important for cancer prevention. The dried grass of barley is also an excellent source of protein, vitamins and minerals.

Beans are a great source of fiber which also helps to reduce cholesterol levels by up to 10%. In addition, these high protein sources may also help regulate blood sugar levels.

Blueberries are a great antibiotic. A handful of these sweet, tart berries can help stop harmful bacteria from attaching to the lining of the urinary tract. This can help prevent bladder infections.

Cinnamon can help stimulate insulin activity therefore it may be helpful for those with adult-onset diabetes. It has also been shown to help prevent blood clots, but be sure to use the real Ceylon cinnamon, not a cheap imitation.

Chili Peppers are known to help keep blood flowing freely which helps lower the risk of heart attack and stroke. They contain a substance called capsaicin, which fights inflammation. It is currently being studied for pain relief such as in arthritis and psoriasis. Many athletes advocate using chili pepper sauce on foods to speed up metabolism.

Dates are full of fiber and minerals including calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, potassium, phosphorous and manganese. Dates also contain a natural aspirin.

Garlic has long been used to stimulate the immune system and kill off dangerous parasites. It is antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral, and helps your body eliminate toxic buildup including zinc and lead. The National Cancer Institute is studying garlic for it's anti-tumor properties.

Ginger is a proven to relieve nausea. It also helps to relieve inflammatory pain and swelling caused from rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. In Denmark, researchers found that ginger can block the effect of substances that cause inflammation of the brain leading to migraines. Research has also discovered that it has a similar effect as aspirin does on thinning blood clots.

Parsley is a great source of antioxidants that help fight carcinogens, including those found in tobacco smoke. It has long been known to cleanse the body by absorbing toxins and helping to move them out of the body.

Tea is loaded with polyphenols. These antioxidants have been shown to protect from free radical damage as much as many fruits and vegetables! In addition, a recent study showed that just 2 cups of tea daily may lower the risk of ovarian cancer by 46%. Include it as part of your health regimen, because it is also known to help shed belly fat.

You can easily add many of these foods to your daily program. More and more research is finding how powerful whole foods are and how natural anti aging is possible. This is probably why Hippocrates said "Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.

Forget expensive and painful procedures, check out natural anti aging , and if you are active, see why anti aging exercise is the best exercise to keep you young.

Cholesterol is a fat-like substance circulating in the blood. The body needs a certain amount to maintain cell membranes and perform other vital functions, but high levels lead to blocked arteries which can cause a heart attack.

High cholesterol, we all seem to be aware, poses health risks. While there are medications that can be prescribed to control this beast, there are also a number of dietary and other healthy living measures that can help to lower levels. Here's a rundown we came across that is worth reading.

Beat High Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a fat-like substance circulating in the blood. The body needs a certain amount to maintain cell membranes and perform other vital functions, but high levels lead to blocked arteries which can cause a heart attack.

There are two types of cholesterol: LDL and HDL. The low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is the negative type of cholesterol. High levels of LDL causes unhealthy build-up of cholesterol plaque on artery walls, which can lead to coronary disease. The high-density lipoprotein (HDL) is seen as the positive cholesterol. The HDL carries the LDL away from the artery walls when levels are properly maintained.

High LDL and total cholesterol levels increase the risk of a heart attack, as does a low level of HDL (below 0.9 millimoles per litre). Doctors recommend keeping total cholesterol below 5.6 millimoles per litre, ideally around 5.2 millimoles per litre, and your HDL level as high as possible.

Whatever the cause of your high levels of cholesterol is, it is very important that you make efforts to lower your cholesterol levels by changing your lifestyle, here are 4 tips to get you started.

Have a nice sandwich on whole wheat bread or a pita with some lean turkey and lots of fresh veggies.

Stay away from foods like margarine, shortening, and processed foods containing partially hydrogenated soybean oil.

Eat foods that are high in fiber. Examples include whole wheat bread, oatmeal, fruits, vegetables, beans, and some cereals. (Look for the boxes that say "may help lower cholesterol.")

Find a new salad dressing. Most of them are full of Trans fats and cholesterol. Olive oil is good, and maybe add vinegar or lemon juice. Also, skip the bacon bits, croutons, and egg yolks.

Have more servings of dried peas, beans, soy products, oats, whole grains and high-fibre cereals.

If home remedies do not lower your total cholesterol sufficiently within two or three months, you may need to take prescription drugs. Conventional drugs reduce heart attack risk by up to 25%. Take regular exercise to raise your HDL level.

Fish oil for heart health is an interesting topic. And there is a good reason for this.

There's an awful lot of hype about what's good for heart health, and many claims in the supplement market that are questionable. However, there's a good bit of solid research supporting the conclusion that omega 3 fish oil offers a number of benefits. Take a look at the article that follows for some insight into the research behind fish oil.

Fish Oil that's Good for Heart Health and Research

Fish oil for heart health is an interesting topic. And there is a good reason for this.

Newspapers and magazines can't do without research news on the amazing health benefits of fish oil for heart health. It is highly recommended by doctors, nutritionists, trainers, exercise buffs and even my vet has recommended using fish oil capsules for the heart health of my pet chocolate Labrador, Phyto.

Indeed a lot of us have heard of the good health benefits for the cardiovascular system that omega 3 fish oil has, but not all are aware of the scientific research that verifies the results of the fish oil for heart health craze.

Information was printed in Circulation, the American Heart Association's official journal, which provided systematic and detailed reports on how omega 3 fatty acids from fish can help enrich the circulation and reasons why fish oil works perfectly for the health of your heart and cardiovascular system in several ways.

The study showed that fish oil fatty acids can help in decreasing cholesterol, avoid irregular heartbeat and reduce blood clots. It also lowers blood pressure and triglycerides and balances HDL and LDL, loosens the arterial walls and inhibits the development of new plaque and inflammation, vasoconstriction, platelet aggregation and a lot more. [Vol. 106:2747]

Remarkable! How some scientists have even suggested that a depressed person can get help from omega 3 fish oil. It is good for the broken hearted.

Some group of doctors made and published a study in the Journal of American Medical Association talking about the positive effects of higher fish oil consumption on decreasing a man's risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Yet, it has been observed that more women die of heart attack than from any other cause, so the scientists were interested to know if women can get the same health benefits from fish oil as men do.

They followed 84,688 women in a span of 16 years and they were able to arrive at a conclusion that women who ate 5 or more servings of fish a week have lesser risks of CHD or dying due to a heart attack as compared to women who eat less fish. [Vol. 287, No. 14]

If you ask me, it is very clear that fish oil for heart health is essential. But how much would you need? The usual recommendation is 5 or more servings of oily, cold water fish a week. It is great and will surely improve your heart health, but then again it may not be enough. Many researches do recommend at least 1 to 3 grams of fish oil daily for a healthy heart.

The only sure way that you get this is through supplements of pure omega 3 fish oil capsules that will give you a balance of all the eight naturally occurring omega 3 fatty acids.

Now you can see why a lot of people are recommending fish oil for heart health. The question is, will you do something about it? It would not be that hard to improve your health and it can be worth all the effort. Don't you find it nice to have a pain free, happy, healthy life while you grow old?

Of course it is! And it may start this moment, if you take action and follow this advice.

Natural cures for thyroid problems are often sought out and recommended for thyroid sufferers. Thyroid health is a concern for almost 11 million Americans. A healthy thyroid provides for maintaining healthy weight, metabolism, and cholesterol levels. The thyroid gland produces an important hormone to regulate various needs of the body. Many people are not aware of the thyroid's important role in maintaining over-all health and well being.

What is a thyroid? The thyroid is a gland that's part of the endocrine system. It is responsible for regulating several body functions such as heart rate (pulse), blood pressure, body temperature (basal temperture), and converting food into energy (metabolism). Hormones produced by the thyroid are essential for the function of every cell in the body. These hormones are responsible for the regulation of growth and metabolism in the body. Thyroid hormones also help children grow and develop.

Natural cures for thyroid problems are often taken as supplements. These thyroid supplements are available in two forms: whole-natural or synthetic. For most thyroid sufferers, it is better to use whole-natural cures for thyroid problems for several reasons.

First, synthetic (also known as man-made) supplements typically only have one of the necessary thyroid hormones (typically T3 or T4). In contrast, whole-natural supplements will have a broader range of hormones (as much as T1, T2, T3, and T4).

Secondly, synthetic supplements have inconsistencies in their dosage whereas natural supplements are consistent because they're made by nature herself.

And finally, when all costs for a synthetic are factored in (drive to the doctor, office co-pay, prescription co-pay, insurance deductable, etc), natural cures for thyroid problems cost less.

Here are just a few of the benefits of natural cures for thyroid problems:

* Natural supplements have more of necessary thyroid hormones.

* Natural supplements have more consistent dosages.

* Natural supplements have an overall lower cost.

Modern medicine relies heavily on surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy in treating cancer.. For all of us who have gopne through these devastating treatments, we all look for alternative ways to treat our symptoms and to rebuild our natural health..

We all recognize that modern medicine has made amazing leaps and bounds in the treatment and management of cancer particularly when compared with treatments of the past, however, we have a long way to go before cancer is 100% curable. Further more, cancer is taking on different forms and is increasing in thew number of diagnosed cases throughout the world's population.

It cannot be denied that modern medicine has come a long way in the treatment and management of many forms of cancer. Our knowledge and treatment of these maladies is far in advance of what was common practice of years past, however, we have a long way to go before cancer is 100% curable. Unfortunately cancer is taking on different forms and is increasing in regularity throughout the worlds population.

Many of us believe the alternative medicine for cancer can best be found in altering our diets and to include other herbal remedies that are known to assist in regeneration of the body as well as in pain management giving sufferers a mor holistic approach to both prevention and the cure of cancer.

Alternative Medicine for Cancer Prevention

It is well known that adequate fiber content helps to prevent cancers of the digestive tract. Holistic nutrition using coarse grain and unrefined flour are therefore useful forms of alternative medicine for cancer containment. Traditional medicine also has dietary supplements based on the husks of cereals which help to keep bowel movement in good order. It is worth following principles of alternative medicine for cancer prevention if malignancies of the colon and surrounding areas are likely.

Similarly, there are herbal extracts available which help cancerous lesions developing in the liver. The vitamins, minerals, enzymes and elements found in fresh organic fruits and vegetables are known to be the building blocks and the repair kit of the human body It is therefore worthwhile to use alternative medicine for cancer management of vital organs in a pro-active way.

Alternative Medicine for Cancer Management near Termination

As the population of the world becomes more aware of he symptoms of cancer and a general understanding of how to prevent there onset along with timely detection should prevent every case of cancer from reaching a stage at which it can no longer be arrested, but unfortunately medical science is yet to reach the plane from which all patients can be cured effectively. Patients may have to spend considerable periods in terminal and progressive stages of eventually fatal illness.

Thankfully, today more and more people are understanding that essential nutrition and pain management are key considerations to make the final days of a terminally ill patient as comfortable as possible. Alternative medicine for cancer has important applications in this tragic but sometimes inescapable context. Nutrition powders and fluid extracts can be used on patients who are too unwell to enjoy normal meals, while topical preparations can be used with modern drugs to deal with distressing pain.

There are also some unsubstantiated claims of alternative medicine for cancer containment or reversal, which patients and their relatives may like to try when modern methods offer no further hope. Some patients are known to have exceeded the prognoses for their malignant conditions by long periods using alternative medicine for cancer.

Ocular nutrition refers to the vitamins and foods that help maintain and repair the parts of the eye, including the cornea, iris, pupil and retina. When people think of nutrition, they rarely think about their eyes. They think about their weight, and maybe their muscles, most definitely their thighs and waist.

Nutrition equates to calorie counting and cardiovascular exercise, but never to eye health. Ocular nutrition, however, is as important as fighting obesity, especially when the goal is to live a long, productive and happy life.

Each of these parts is essential in proper vision, but each requires specific minerals and acids to function properly. With the determination of eating habits in modern, drive-through society, most of these nutrients are missing during meal time. With a little research, however, anyone can learn the necessary supplements to make up for these absences, and give some much-needed attention to his or her eyes.

More than Carrots

Carotenoids have been proven to reduce the risks of macular degeneration related to age. Leafy vegetables and greens, including spinach, are rich in these vitamins, and can rarely be duplicated in supplements. Other vegetables, including corn and non-leafy greens, contain lutein and zeaxanthin, two carotenoids that help to combat cataracts. Lutein is also found in egg yokes, making this food essential for ocular nutrition. However, many of these foods are missing in the average diet; most meals will not include spinach, and society has developed a strong aversion to eggs.

Aside from vegetables, many fruits also contain vitamins and minerals necessary to ocular nutrition. Apricots, full of beta carotene and lycopene, promote great vision. The body converts beta carotene to vitamin A, an antioxidant crucial to the resistance of oxidation. Oxidation stresses cells and tissue, including the lenses of the eyes, causing irreparable damage in the form of cataracts or a blockage in the supply of blood to the eyes. Blueberries and cranberries are most notable for their reduction of urinary tract infections; however, both fruits can also help reduce eye fatigue and promote overall healthy ocular nutrition.

While it is always better to digest these vitamins naturally in food, for many people, such balanced meals are impossible. Both time and money can influence greatly what people eat; however, there are many supplements available to make up for any shortcomings in ocular nutrition. Most multi-vitamins contain vitamin A and antioxidants, but for carotenoids, specific formulas might have to be purchased. Fish oil, high in fatty acids, is also a good supplement for ocular nutrition, reducing the occurrence of macular degeneration and other ailments.

The baby boomer generation is comprised of those born between the years of 1946 through 1964 and is the largest demographic group in history because of the large spike in births after World War II. The first person born in the baby boomer era entered her sixties as 2006 began, bringing into focus the question of how baby boomers are handling aging.

One of the answers to how baby boomers are adjusting to aging can be summarized in one word: fighting. The generation of the baby boomer has demonstrated a stronger drive and desire to stay looking and feeling young for as long as they possibly can than any other generation in history. A century ago, the life expectancy of the average American was just 45 years. Since then, the expected life span has been increasing to about 70 to 75 years. But now, experts are claiming that those boomers now entering an age range heretofore labeled as senior citizens are justified in expecting that they could achieve life spans of 90 to 100 years and do so actively and in relatively good health. The only impediments are the current tendency toward obesity and lifestyle illnesses.

The reason for anticipating an extended life span in part can be attributed to significant advances in medical research and medical technology. But, that is not the entire story. It has to be acknowledged that baby boomers are responding to aging by taking a pro-active approach through the kinds of choices they are making in an all out effort to battle the ravages of time and slow down the aging process.

Clearly, the baby boomer generation is not satisfied to simply sit back and ease into old age. They are staying physically active, challenging themselves mentally, staying involved in community affairs and entrepreneurship, and are more intensely focused on health and nutrition than previous generations. At an age when their predecessors were winding down and preparing to go home to quiet retirement and aging in private, the boomer crowd is staying engaged and is redefining the role of the aging population. If any group will manage to destroy the myths surrounding old age, basically that the lights go out along with a fade into uselessness, it will be the baby boomers.

Baby boomers know that feeling younger and looking better is about more than just how a person looks on the outside and what sort of bill of health they receive from their doctor. They know it also has a great deal to do with how a person feels about themselves, the attitude about aging and reaching certain milestones of age, and how they take on the challenges of the aging process. There has been increased recognition from experts about the importance of mental fitness and health and this is one of the foremost ways we can see that baby boomers are staying on top of aging. Ask almost any boomer and you will hear them talk about how you are only as old as you believe yourself to be - lots of recalculating here.

But, the generation of the baby boomer is realistic, too, and they are well-educated and savvy. Just watch the trends of this demographic group and you will see that baby boomers are handling aging by taking better care of themselves physically in their combat against the aging process. Making time for regular exercise is much more important to this group than it was to their parents. And, because of the technological advancements that have become part of the general lifestyle, this is a good thing because most boomers don't have the same kinds of physical demands from daily life put on them as was the case in earlier generations.

How baby boomers are handling aging can also be seen in their focus on nutrition. Many boomers learned years ago about the benefits of taking nutritional supplements. They are also more aware of the impact of their diet on their overall health and on how well, or how poorly, they age. Baby boomers are using all the tools conferred by medical advances and in a better understanding of nutrition and exercise to fight the good fight against aging and are blazing the trail for those who follow to live longer, healthier lives.

Regardless of where you stand in the aging process, your sex or fitness level, good eating habits are the single best thing you can do to improve your health. Staying active plays a large role in overall health, but putting the wrong kind or wrong quantity of food in you body will keep you from being as healthy as you would like. Moreover, it does not require you to spend oodles of cash on the latest anti-aging fads.

If you're feeling resistant to changing poor eating habits, it may be in your best interests to think differently.

Best Eating Habits

The best kind of eating habits you can develop are ones that allow you to enjoy what you eat (not a complete feel good diet however), but have a balanced and good diet that doesn't leave you getting too much of one thing and not enough of another. One nutrient that is commonly out of proportion is carbohydrates. Typically people in modernized western cultures have feel good diets that lead to a higher than necessary carb intake, which leads to those carbs being broken down and stored as fat. Carbs are essentially complex sugars, which are burned for energy, unless they are unneeded. Unfortunately most of the foods that taste the best are loaded with carbs. However, they are not altogether bad, but eating too many carbs can cause you to gain weight. Good eating habits and a good diet plan cause your carb intake to be balanced so that excess carbs are not being stored as fat and you actually feel good instead of having a completely carefree feel good diet.

Avoid Too Much Cholesterol

Too much fat and cholesterol intake is also an enemy of good eating habits. In some ways it is better to eat more fat than carbs, since your body has to work harder, burning more energy, to break down fats. Cholesterol is a necessary part of your diet, but too much cholesterol can cause your heart to become clogged, increasing your blood pressure, and causing you to be less healthy and put you at risk for a heart attack.

Balance is the Key

Although a good diet plan is going to be a little different for everyone, good eating habits should incorporate foods from all the food groups: grains, meats, dairy, and fruits/vegetables. The classic food pyramid says that you should get about six servings of grains, about three servings of fruit, three servings of vegetables, two servings of meat, and two servings from the dairy group. There is also a designated 'other' group that consists of junk food and beverages, like soda, that have little positive nutritional value. The food pyramid indicates that foods from this 'other' group should be used sparingly, and perhaps should not be part of your good diet plan. However, your intake of food from the 'other' group will depend largely on your metabolism and your health goals.

Although it can be tough to stay disciplined, good eating habits will repay you with improved health and energy. If you develop an exercise routine, your metabolism will speed up, allowing you to eat more without consequence, which makes it easier to maintain a balanced diet. After all, good eating habits do not mean being a diet monk that avoids any pleasure from food. It simply means taking care of yourself by watching what you put in your body.
