As we age, back problems often begin to interfere with normal activities, and that can include getting a good night's sleep. Here are some pointers to help with the problem that you may want to keep in mind.

3 Simple Ways To Stop Back Problems From Ruining Your Sleep

Back problems and back pain are possibly the most frustrating physical hardship to endure. Not only are back problems difficult to diagnose, they seem to interfere with the most routine of our daily tasks. Walking, bending over, and even sitting for lengthy periods of time can be challenging and painful. Have you ever aggravated your back pain with a simple sneeze?

Even with simple daily tasks hindered by back pain, there's nothing worse than losing a good night's sleep due to back problems. There's no question that back problems are extremely hard to diagnose. However, there are a few easy, inexpensive solutions which can help your back pain and allow you a good nights rest.

Interestingly, the manner in which you sleep can cause you to toss and turn and feel non-refreshed, even after a full eight hours devoted to sleep. Most back problems and back pain are attributed to poor posture and misalignment due to improper lifting, sitting for long periods of time, and other activities. Therefore, it stands to reason you should ensure your body alignment and posture while sleeping aren't contributing to or even causing your back pain.

Proper Sleep Alignment Is Key

A key factor in getting a good night's sleep and reducing back pain is to make sure you have proper sleep alignment. This means sleeping in such a way that there's no added pressure on your back or neck. It doesn't matter in which position you like to sleep - what is most important is aligning properly to take pressure off your back.

There are three easy, inexpensive solutions to proper sleep alignment. Adding a memory foam pad to your mattress will ensure your entire body is supported, unlike most mattresses. Another solution is a lumbar/spine pad, which are designed to provide continuous lower back support and remove additional pressure on your back. Also you should consider a countoured pillow. These pillows ensure your head and neck are supported and in proper alignment.

There's a good chance your back pain is aggravated or even caused by how you sleep. You can greatly reduce or even eliminate your back pain with inexpensive, ergonomic solutions like memory foam pads or countoured pillows. Of course, it's also important to add healthy habits to your life like non jarring low impact exercise. Pilates are extremely effective in helping back problems. Added together, these simple solutions can greatly improve not only your sleep, but your overall quality of life.

Did you know that a little over 2 million Americans suffer from gout symptoms every year? If you want to reduce your chances of suffering from gout for too long, you'll need to know the signs to look for so you can get immediate treatment and decrease the amount of time it takes for you to recover. After reading the following indicators of gout below, you'll be equipped to more easily stave off the more debilitating aspects of this arthritic disease.

You'll probably wake up to the first of several gout symptoms with a jolt. You'll feel the throbbing of an inflamed joint, and when you peel back the bed sheet to take a look, you'll see a shiny red joint with skin tightly pulled over it. More than likely, your big toe will be the offender, but other joints can join the party too. Keep an eye on your fingers, wrists, elbows and ankles.

Next, keep tabs on your pain to see if it increases over the next several hours. After a few hours, you may be in excruciating pain and unable to even bear touching the joint.

Gout symptoms can sometimes be disguised as feeling extremely tired or having a slight fever. If you're tired all the time or have a temperature of 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, along with a swollen joint that's warm and painful to touch, then you're having a gout attack.

So, to go over the gout symptoms checklist again, ask yourself the following questions:

- Do you have a shiny red and swollen joint that feels warm and painful?

- Does the pain increase over a few hours time?

- Do you feel slightly feverish or greatly fatigued, in addition to having the painful joint?

If you experience these indicators, get treatment or try gout pain remedies as soon as possible.

Many natural gout remedies exist but one of the first things most people seek for relief is gout medicine. Prescribed gout medications are usually the main solution used when people are afflicted with any ailment and gout sufferers are no different. Many of these medications focus on reducing the high uric acidity level in the bloodstream.

The two most common gout medicines are corticosteroids and NSAIDs. These help reduce inflammation in the affected joints. NSAIDs are taken by mouth in high dosages. They also aid in prohibiting the spread of prostaglandin, a substance that plays its part in causing you severe pain during a gout flare-up.

If NSAIDs aren't effective for you, then turning to corticosteroids are the next doctor recommendation. Like NSAIDs, these also give instant relief to gout victims. They are injected directly into the inflamed joint to mainly target that area.

But the downside to using corticosteroids is that you can't use it daily or during subsequent attacks. If you do, your bone cartilage will weaken and your joints will get damaged.

If both of the above medications fail, then your doctor may recommend that you take colchicines. These can be used once every hour for the first 12 hours of the flare-up. Even though you can experience diarrhea and stomach cramps and an upset stomach as side effects of taking this gout medicine, colchicines have been around for hundreds of years and have proven themselves to be an effective pain reliever.

As with most medications, gout medicine has its positives and negatives, so it's essential that you choose your method of relief carefully. Seek out the help of health professionals and other sufferers for resources that'll give you the best chance to win your battle with gout.

Gaining pain control is a common delemma when you are dealing with cancer patients. Yet there is the possibility that pain can come from an outside source, such as an infection or muscular disease. By talking with your physician, you can find ways to manage your aches when fighting cancer.

Pain can be acute or chronic. Acute pain is severe, but short-lived and chronic is pain that lasts for longer periods of time, and can range from mild to severe. Sometimes patients will experience breakthrough pain, which is pain that breaks through medications prescribed to the patient. According to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network's (NCCN) August 2005 pain prevention report, one-third of cancer patients experience pain with their treatments. The NCCN also reports that nearly two-thirds of patients with recurring cancer or advanced stages of cancer experience pain.

Pain Control is Possible

Pain control is possible, even for those suffering from cancer, and it can give a patient a better quality of life. Pain in cancer patients is most often a result of the cancer itself, but sometimes it can result from a specific treatment, such as radiation therapy. Pain can be relieved through several ways. For example, pain control can be through medications, relaxation methods, acupuncture or mental therapy sessions. Each patient is unique and pain can be evaluated through a cancer team made up of specialists such as an oncologist, anesthesiologist, pain specialists and your physician.

It is important for you to discuss any pain you experience with your doctor or medical professional so they can figure out what methods would work best for you. The earlier pain is ministered to, the easier it will be to handle it during your cancer treatments. If you experience pain that is unrelated to your cancer diagnosis, it is important to find the best method to stop the pain before beginning your treatment. For example, arthritis pain prevention can be found through physical therapy sessions, water therapy or oral medications. If a patient suffers from cancer in the spinal cord, he or she may need to learn about back and neck pain control. This type of pain occurs because the cancer causes the spinal cord to compress, causing sharp pains in the back and neck regions.

Pain Medications

The National Cancer Institute's (NCI) web site mentions several medications doctors use to maintain pain control for their patients. This can range from steroids for swelling, anti-inflammatory drugs, or morphine. The NCI discusses the side affects usually associated with pain medication. Many of the pain medications used for cancer patients are not addictive and patients shouldn't worry about taking them. The side affects associated with some medications, such as vomiting or drowsiness, can be prevented or relieved by your doctor. It can be helpful if you keep a record of your pain to help doctors know where it occurs and how long it persists. This will give them a better idea of what is causing your pain. Pain can even cause emotional distress, depression or anxiety. Simply speaking to a therapist or counselor can help you talk through the issues you face with your pain.

Also worth pointing out is the helpful information about pain control and pain relief is available at this site Pain Relief Options, detailing a number of different approaches to contolling pain.

Managing pain control with cancer is not a figment of one's imagination. In fact, the hurt that accompanies cancer and its treatments can be controlled with the proper medication or therapy. Discussing any ache or soreness in your body with a physician will put you on the path to a smoother, more tolerable recovery from cancer.
