In a recent physical, my doctor spotted some early signs of cataracts which reminds me that I should schedule an eye exam. I'm not experiencing any symptoms at all, so, like most of us, my attitude has been that if it doesn't seem broken, don't fix it. But the fact is that I haven't had my eyes looked at for at least three years.

For many years, and through my fifties, I was near sighted. Now, it's just the reverse. My distance vision is sharp, but I need glasses for reading. During my last eye exam, the doctor told me that was normal in the aging process. Anyhow, the following article is also a good reminder that I need to get an eye examination whether I think I need it or not. I'm picking up the phone to make an appointment just as soon as I've finished doing this posting. Read on for more discussion.

Ocular nutrition refers to the vitamins and foods that help maintain and repair the parts of the eye, including the cornea, iris, pupil and retina. When people think of nutrition, they rarely think about their eyes. They think about their weight, and maybe their muscles, most definitely their thighs and waist.

Nutrition equates to calorie counting and cardiovascular exercise, but never to eye health. Ocular nutrition, however, is as important as fighting obesity, especially when the goal is to live a long, productive and happy life.

Each of these parts is essential in proper vision, but each requires specific minerals and acids to function properly. With the determination of eating habits in modern, drive-through society, most of these nutrients are missing during meal time. With a little research, however, anyone can learn the necessary supplements to make up for these absences, and give some much-needed attention to his or her eyes.

More than Carrots

Carotenoids have been proven to reduce the risks of macular degeneration related to age. Leafy vegetables and greens, including spinach, are rich in these vitamins, and can rarely be duplicated in supplements. Other vegetables, including corn and non-leafy greens, contain lutein and zeaxanthin, two carotenoids that help to combat cataracts. Lutein is also found in egg yokes, making this food essential for ocular nutrition. However, many of these foods are missing in the average diet; most meals will not include spinach, and society has developed a strong aversion to eggs.

Aside from vegetables, many fruits also contain vitamins and minerals necessary to ocular nutrition. Apricots, full of beta carotene and lycopene, promote great vision. The body converts beta carotene to vitamin A, an antioxidant crucial to the resistance of oxidation. Oxidation stresses cells and tissue, including the lenses of the eyes, causing irreparable damage in the form of cataracts or a blockage in the supply of blood to the eyes. Blueberries and cranberries are most notable for their reduction of urinary tract infections; however, both fruits can also help reduce eye fatigue and promote overall healthy ocular nutrition.

While it is always better to digest these vitamins naturally in food, for many people, such balanced meals are impossible. Both time and money can influence greatly what people eat; however, there are many supplements available to make up for any shortcomings in ocular nutrition. Most multi-vitamins contain vitamin A and antioxidants, but for carotenoids, specific formulas might have to be purchased. Fish oil, high in fatty acids, is also a good supplement for ocular nutrition, reducing the occurrence of macular degeneration and other ailments.

While we aging folks concern ourselves with the threats of heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes, we tend to ignore eye care and vision changes. However, According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, one in three Americans will suffer some form of age-related eye disease by age 65, one in two by age 80.

But few are concerned or even aware of their risk factors, such as family history, ethnicity, undiagnosed diabetes and glaucoma.

If age 50, 60, or beyond is fast approaching, new vision concerns may be within your sight. It is natural for some vision changes to occur by age 50. But more serious conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration become more prevalent in later years. Regular eye examinations are important at every stage of life, and the senior years are no exception. A comprehensive eye exam will not only measure how well you see, but assess the health of your eyes as well.

The American Optometric Association (AOA) stresses the importance of having regular eye exams. Speaking of older adults, the organization says:

Individuals age 61 or older have an increasing risk for the development of cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration and other sight threatening or visually disabling eye conditions as well as systemic health conditions. Therefore, annual eye examinations are recommended.

At Risk: Individuals diagnosed with diabetes or hypertension, or who have a family history of glaucoma or cataracts, and those taking systemic medications with ocular side effects or those with other health concerns or conditions.

Among other things, adults over age 50 should pay attention to tired or burning eyes, avoiding close work, experiencing near misses or difficulty parking when driving, having spots or floaters, noticing distortions in vision and that lighting in the room seems insufficient, having a decrease in peripheral vision, and having diabetes and not having had a dilated eye exam in more than a year.

Individuals between the ages of 41 and 60 should visit the optometrist every two years. Annual exams are recommended for those over age 61. Seniors with specific problems or risk factors may need more frequent visits.
